Three Disadvantages of Computer Water Cooling

Water cooling is a very effective way to cool your computer. A water cooling system is more powerful than a fan system since water conducts heat faster than air. With a water cooling system, heat given off by internal computer components is rapidly absorbed and carried away by water. Water cooling has many disadvantages, however. Here are three of them.

* Risk of Water Leaks

The main problem that stands out on everyone’s minds is the risk of water leaks. Water leaks can fry your sensitive circuitry in moments.

When installing a water cooling system, make sure that everything is attached properly. To check the integrity of your water cooling system, follow these three simple steps: turn off your computer, let the water run through the tubing for some time, and observe carefully for any leaks. If leaks occur, you can immediately address the problem and save your computer hardware.

* Difficult to Install

A water cooling system is a complicated set up. You need to string together a lot of components such as the water blocks, pump, radiator, reservoir and all the tubing. You also need to take extra care when setting up the system. Ill-attached components will result in water leaks. Kinked and bent tubing will restrict the flow of water and lower the system’s cooling capacity.

* Expensive

Compared to cooling by air, water cooling is more expensive. You can get a good computer fan for around $15. With four internal fans, you already have a decent air cooling system.

For a water cooling system, you need to spend more than $100. Water blocks can sell for as low as $30 to more than $150 each. The water pump and reservoir will each cost an additional $50 or so. A radiator can be bought for $15. The tubing can be purchased for around $1 per meter. You need to pay your computer technician a pretty penny too if you want to circumvent the hassle of setting up the system.

If installed properly and constructed out of solid quality components, a water cooling system can keep your computer cooler and quieter than a fan cooling system for a long period of time.
