Buying a Computer Case: Three Things to Consider

Are you looking to purchase a new case for your computer? Perhaps your old one is battered and dented beyond repair or you just want a new look. Before you throw out your old casing and get a new one, consider what you need a new computer case for. Do you simply want a structure that will shield your delicate internal PC components from dust and harm? Or are you a gamer with high cooling needs? Here are some factors to consider when selecting a computer case that fits your needs.

* Size

How many computer components do you intend to fit inside your case? If you will only be using your computer for light tasks, you will simply need a motherboard with built-in graphics and sound cards, a CPU, one RAM stick, a hard disk drive, and a power supply. These components will give you a functional computer that can run basic office applications but nothing more. If you want more power and added functionality, you will have to fit in more components like an optical drive or a separate graphics card.

* Cooling Capacity

This is not an issue with an office workstation that will only be seeing word processing applications or Web pages. If you will be playing today’s demanding games, you will have to get a larger computer case for more air flow, usually a regular-sized desktop case or a tower PC. Fitting two or three fans inside your case will help your computer components cool faster.

* Cost

The price tag of goods is always a factor to weigh in any purchase. Some casings are branded so you will be required to shell out more money for the prestige of owning a Shuttle XPC or a Dell tower. Other casings have extra features like a removable motherboard tray that greatly simplifies the installation of motherboards. You will have to pay a premium for all these extras which, although useful, are not actually necessary.

Choosing a computer case is really not such a big dilemma if you are not picky over which computer components to have and if your computing needs are small. If you purchase a value regular-sized computer case, chances are you will be able to fit everything you need inside. But for those individuals who need more power such as gamers and multimedia professionals, more computer hardware and accessories are needed to boost system performance. Casing size will then be a big factor to consider, as well as cooling capacity.
